JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

I saw it today at the State Theater. First of all it took 2 1/2 hours to get there from the Bronx and when I arrived there was no parking. Once I finally found a lot I then had to walk to the theater. I was not impressed with my seats or the adaptation of the rock opera itself. I would not choose to visit this venue again.

VERY DISAPPOINTING

Talented performers, but it was not the emotion evoking performance expected from this Broadway classic. Nothing more than prop choreography (mic stands, mics and guitars as props???) while singing the songs from JCS. Save your entertainment dollar for a more worthy event.

AUDIO ENGINEERING LEFT MUCH TO BE DESIRED

I found myself not being able to hear a single word of what was being sung in a MAJORITY of the pieces because the bass was so loud and the orchestra drowned out all the performers, even at full tilt. Had to wait for certain lyric cues in certain scenes to know where we were at in the story, and I grew up catholic knowing the passion almost verbatim. Lived for the pieces that were inherently quiet because you could actually hear the aingers...Could have split the performers from the orchestra by dropping their bass and increasing mids but at times it just felt like being in a washing machine. I felt bad for the performers. It was good otherwise! But when you can't hear the lyrics....

NOT THAT GREAT

Judas does a really good job. Jesus is angry all the time, and is eclipsed by Judas.

TERRIBLE SOUND

The good news: Jaden Dominique (playing Mary Magdalene) was great. Her voice saved the show. For the rest, well, meh. The sound was overpowered for the venue, forcing all the singers to try to overpower the music - an unfortunate competition resulting in so much noise. It was impossible to make out the words of the songs half the time. Jack Hopewell (Jesus) had no stage presence. Elvie Ellis (Judas) started off well, but lost the battle to the noise. Alex Stone (Pilate) did his best to enunciate despite the noise. I can't rate the choreography, as the incomprehensible words of the songs made it difficult to match the dancing with the story. With all due deference to the actors' best efforts, this production is best avoided

HATED IT!

Ever since I first heard the album in 1972, I have been a huge fan of Jesus Christ Superstar. I love the music, and the movie. I have seen and loved many versions of the play. This version that I saw tonight at San Jose Center for Performing Arts was impossible to watch. My seat in the theater was perfect, however the choreography was so chaotic and distracting that I kept staring at the ceiling or the walls so I could enjoy the music. Each time I would chance a glance at the beginning of the next song, some new crazy weird unrelated choreography would be going on again. Awful! Jesus and Pilot playing guitars?? Why? No! The singers had microphones with cords and mike stands. Why? And what was the point of the obscene gestures the priests were making with their mike stands. All the choreography was so uncomfortable. The music was wonderful.

PRETTY BAD

I saw this musical in San Jose on 10/26/19. Prior to purchasing tickets, I looked online to see what the musical was about. It had gotten many rave reviews so I was not expecting such an awful show. The music was just okay. The set, costume, and delivery were all weak. Choreography was terrible. I planned to leave during intermission but there was no intermission so I was stuck till the end. I didn’t enjoy any part of it.
